Four of the cords or ribbons used in a handfasting ceremony have colours which symbolise the elements

Green for the Earth

Gold for the Air

Blue for the Sea

Red for the Fire

Some people like to choose one of their guests to represent the icon of each element . These four will then hold the appropriate cord or ribbon , until the celebrants asks them , each in turn , to hand it to her so she can use that cord to tie around the couple's wrists
