Marriage Wreath

Marriage wreaths have a long history in mamy different cultures , whether worn round the neck or on the head , hung up or laid on a table or a floor

In Ancient Greece brides wore a wreath of flowers , herbs and garlic bulbs on their head , and in India the bride and groom still exchange garlands worn round their necks . It is highly likely that the bridal bouquet , and buttonholes for the groom and guests evolved from those earlier traditions

For a long time it was the custom to hang a wreath on the door of the house or church, where a wedding was taking place , and we still see wreaths and posies decorating the sides of the central aisle in churches

A marriage wreath is made of ivy , bound either into the shape of a circle or a heart . It can be made by one person - or many , depending on your preference

It can be a lovely way of bringing your friends , or members of your family , into being part of your ceremony . It is up to you to decide whether you yourself want to make a list of the flowers or herbs to attach to the base , or to let the makers decide for themselves . In either case , it is easy to find lists of the traditional meanings of each flower and herb

You can have one made exclusively of flowers , or one of herbs , or both , which gives the wreath a wonderful combined scent

Equally , you can decide whether you want the flowers of season of the year or silk flowers

The wreath will then be carried in by one or more of the makers , and , during the ceremony , the celebrant will ask them to say a few words to explain what the meaning of those particular flowers or herbs is , and why they were chosen
